Join Obi J (@thenearzone) and Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf) on a journey from the squared circle to the North Pole! The talk in this episode is based in Christmas movies, especially the classics like A Christmas Carol and It's A Wonderful Life. We really try to get into what makes something Christmassy, besides all the tinsel and snow, and do our best to bring that magic to the artform of pro wrestling. And in the booking portion, Kurt Angle desperately wants to be Santa Claus while Baron Corbin is busy putting reindeer horns on a dog.
Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of Weird of Sport where J Onwuka (@thenearzone) and Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf) find new ways to tell stories through pro wrestling. This week it's the most direct line: action movies! Are flippy dives the wrestling equivalent of action movie explosions? Who'd be a better John McClane: Steve Austin or Randy Orton? Major topics of the episode are what exactly makes an action movie, what "star power" or "It factor" mean and how they're important to action & to wrestling, and a discussion about whether westerns are action movies (answer? they can be). Tune in for a really good investigation of how these two story forms can meld together!
Have you ever thought to yourself, "What if WWE did a princess storyline?" or "How would a happily ever after work inside the squared circle?" I hope you didn't doubt us cause J Onwuka (@thenearzone) and Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf) have got you covered as usual! In this episode, we try to parse out the interesting aspects of Disney-type movies, what gives them wide appeal, and how that can be translated to the wrestling ring.
Join us again spec graps fans as we (that is, J Onwuka (@thenearzone) and Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf)) finally put the capper on Return of the King and the entire Lord of the Rings project. Too ambitious? You bet! But we finally got it to the end! How does it turn out when James "Gollum" Ellsworth finally gets his hands on the One Ring but ends up destroyed by the fires of Dhoom? Listen and find out!
Another move is made along the game board of Return of the King as Obi/J (@thenearzone) and Jeff the Preff (@EminentProf) head back for more. Did we mention that these movies are long? More Aragorn J Styles, more Setholas, more Gimli the Rhyno, more White Wizard of the Blizzard Chris Jericho! We set up the two major pay per views here, the Battle of Minas Tirith and the big one, MordorMania. Are we leaving you hanging for another episode? Yeah we are, but we're having fun along the way!
Fantasy grapple fans rejoice as Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf) and J Onwuka (@thenearzone) get back on track with the wrestling conversion of the Lord of the Rings film series. As noted in the previous episode, these two chronic ramblers do their best to focus a little and end up having an interesting discussion about making a high fantasy epic work within the structure of pro wrestling, how journeys in stories signify more than just travel, and what exactly a wrestling title means... or is it just a shiny gold prop? Plus, the debut of Aragorn J Styles's new finisher, Anduril! But who's the Elrond that shows it to him? Listen to find out!
Hey folks, just a quick update here. The episodes have all been renumbered so that the regular and un-Weird episodes are all part of the same continuity. Just gonna make it easier to keep things straight going forward!
Plus, the podcast will be coming soon to your podcatchers so keep an eye out!
Hello genre-mix fans, Obi J (@thenearzone) and Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf) are back again with another atypical episode of this atypical podcast. The Return of the King material is pushed back to next time but there is a cast rundown at the end of the episode, just to prep for the real Return. Why's the change? Well a bit of rethinking has gone on as regards to how the podcast will go forwards and that's the main subject of the show, so if you're interested in a bit of 'theory talk' about storytelling and pro wrestling this is the one for you. Plus Jeff goes into his work with the DSA's brakelight campaign in New Orleans and we talk Mae Young Classic. Dig in!
On the second LotR/WWE mashup podcast episode, J (@thenearzone on twitter) and Jeff (@EminentProf) get into the second movie of the trilogy: The Two Towers! Spoilers abound, so go listen to episode one first! You good now? You all caught up? Fantastic! This time, we've got battles in Isengard, our hobbits/Fashion Police get caught by some orcs, and Sami Zayn gets ever closer to Mordor. Heckkkkk this one gets crazy! And long! Check it out!
Join J Onwuka (on twitter @thenearzone) and Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf) as they take a trip into Middle Earth with the hobbitses and the wizards and the elves, mashing up Lord of the Rings with WWE. This episode covers movie one of the trilogy, the Fellowship of the Ring, and all of the marquee matches are in there! Who gets cast as the Balrog? Tune in to find out!
So you might say that we are just ripping off of Kaiju Big Battel with this and you might be right, but is WWE baby! Kaiju Big Battel never had Brock Lesnar as a mecha godzilla monster! We split WWE up into the "monsters division" and then the "regular people" division, and there are nods to Power Rangers & forming up magical beasts and all kinds of craziness. And the requisite chat about WrestleMania coming up. Your one stop shop for weird wrestling talk right here, with J Onwuka (@thenearzone) and Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf)!
This episode might be a little quiet and might have a lot of static, so be prepared for the rollercoaster!
In this second un-Weird of Sport episode, J Onwuka (@thenearzone) & Jeff the Professor (@EminentProf) chat about why singles matches are so prevalent and why WWE puts so much emphasis on them. J's answer? Soap opera.
We've been gone too long! Two ramblin dudes J Onwuka (@thenearzone) and Jeff B (@EminentProf) are back again ramblin about pro wrestling and a new genre: film noir! Shady scenes, shady characters, shade-throwing, if you're a fan of gumshoes, the mafia, and femme fatales we've got em for you this time! WWE meets Chinatown, L.A. Confidential, The Big Sleep, and so on. Put your flatcap on, check that no strange cars are in the driveway, and laugh along with us.
This time, J (@thenearzone) and Jeff (@EminentProf) go back onto the deep end and talk about pro wrestling as it is, not as it could (or should) be. WWE's storytelling is the hot topic today, and the basic question is: 'Why?' Why does WWE bury talents that it should be building up? Why does WWE make us sit through hour-long promos to get to five minute matches? And why, if WWE does everything that a wrestling show absolutely shouldn't do, is WWE still so successful? We do our best to dig into this, but it's complicated! It's gonna take more than one episode to un-weird the behemoth that comes from Stamford CT.
People keep comparing WWE to the election, or is it the election to WWE? I don't know anymore this world we live in is wacky!!!!!! If you prefer to bury your head in the sand for an hour rather than deal with more of this horrible parade of villains, please give this episode of Weird of Sport a listen! Jeff (@EminentProf) and J Onwuka make lots of jokes about Hillary scandals and Trump lies and at the end of it, the only thing that changes hands is a pro wrestling title belt, instead of the future of the human civilization. Laugh so you don't cry!
On this Weird of Sport episode, J is joined by Jeff (@EminentProf) to talk about making wrestlers into gunslingers... or slam-slingers, anyway. Dean Ambrose gets cast as Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name, Vince is back to run rustlers off of his show SmackDown/WhipLash, and Daniel Bryan is a dopey deputy. Come set a spell, have some laughs, and learn somethin dang nabbit!
J is joined by Jeff (@EminentProf) for a wild talk about taking WWE into the far future! Star Wars Trek, Babylon 30, the Fish Element, it's all on the table here. Who will Shinsuke Nakamura debut against at WrestleMania 3000? If you wanted to hear about how pro wrestling could be more like a laser-blasting space opera, you're in luck!
